Grav v1.8.0-beta.25 throws error

This update appeared today but clicking Start Safe Upgrade give the error

Safe upgrade failed
syntax error, unexpected ‘protected’ (T_PROTECTED), expecting variable (T_VARIABLE)

All plugins are already updated.

What do I need to do?
