What’s the proper way to clone and rename a template?
@daeron, Your questions lacks a bit of context…
“Cloning” could mean a simple cp and mv, or “overriding” a template in a child theme. And you may have another interpretation…
Please elaborate.
I’d copied Grav to a new directory, replaced Grav with the new name in the yaml files in blueprint & its sub-directories, no affect. But have just discovered it was named in a blueprints.yaml in its root.
Sorry, but I have so much more questions after this answer. Not only it doesn’t explain anything, but confuses even more
Replaced Grav with new name? Copied to new directory? Files in blueprint & its sub-directories..?
@daeron, Are your perhaps talking about copying a “theme”?
It would be nice if you could add some clarification when repondants are confused. Thanks.
By the way, depending on your use-case, inheriting a theme might be a better strategy.
You’re criticising a person for not knowing the answer to a question they are asking. I asked because I did not know that Grav or WordPress had developed a practice they and you call a ‘child theme’ for precisely the propose of not wanting to muck up a theme of templates while customising a version of the theme for actual use. Chances are that if I had known the term, I would have used it or used the word copy instead of clone which is a common vernacular for wanting something that has inherited all of the properties but is separate from the original.
On this forum, may I ask questions for which I do not already know the answer? I don’t wish to intrude if this is not a suitable locale for asking, for example I’d also like to know which if any of the social feed plugins are still working; from their home pages ‘twig feeds’ is clearly active, but there seems to have been some years since ‘Facebook Feed’, ‘Feed’, ‘Feed Us’, and ‘Social Feed’ were updated. Not being updated doesn’t equate to being in any disrepair, but facebook and other major corporations son’t have a good reputation for consistency or collaborativeness.
How did you come up with the conclusion, that you’re being criticized, when there are only questions for clarification?
About feed plugins - it’s a separate topic and would be much better to ask separately to not have two unrelated topics under a single thread
I asked a question, wishing to learn the common means that Grav users use for cloning templates and/or entire themes of templates; I was not asking to be backed into a corner. Whatever the standard Grav approach was would be fine, I just wanted to know which was considered the ‘proper’ means.
This thread was NOT meant to be on forum eloquent; but if you insist, lets review
You expressed confusion about copying directories and editing files, that’s common among Mac and Windows users; but because I’ve not used Grav before, it would be irresponsible for me to tell you that copying directories and manually editing files is something you should be trying.
Then someone appeared annoyed that I hadn’t committed to a cloning strategy without knowing what the typical Grav approach was, annoyance that Karmalakas was confused by the thread, and finally added a Grav reference to the thread.
For clarity, an ideal original response would have been with a few Grav references or something like “You can copy templates, but you might want to consider X Y Z.” Give the person some keywords they can search the Grav documents for (provided they can fight their way pass AI systems giving deranged advice).
